As we are all know, the 2020 presidential election has been declared even though there is a pending court case from the camp of the National Democratic Congress(NDC) headed by Ex-President John Dramani Mahama against The Electoral Commission and President-elect Akufo-Addo. Until the Supreme Court makes any decision, Akufo-Addo is still the president. Most people are raising a very vital point concerning who will lead NPP in 2024 after Akufo-Addo’s tenure has expired.
Unarguably NPP will loose 2024 presidential election mercilessly without Dr. Muhammadu Bawumia as their presidential candidate. We all know how Bawumia has strong political backing from Northern, Upper East and Upper West region which was predominantly an NDC zone. Due to Bawumia, NPP have been able to secure an enviable votes from the Northern part.
The only competition for Bawumia as far as the 2024 Presidential Elections is concerned is Alan Kyerematen popularly known as Alan Cash. Following NPP’s political history Alan Kyeremanten is most likely to get the Presidential node to represent NPP based on the fact that when it comes to NPP, Alan is more popular and a leading member than Bawumia.
Having contested Akufo-Addo for the presidential candidate position on three consecutive occasions which he came third on all the occasions, it should tell you the magnitude of Alan Kyerematen. Alan made an attempt at the leadership of the New Patriotic Party in 2007, capturing 32.3% of votes cast. He was first runner-up to Nana Akufo-Addo who gained 47.96% of votes cast. Kyerematen made other attempts at the party’s leadership in 2010 and 2014 but placed second to Akufo-Addo, who won the primaries.
The truth of the matter is that Ashanti region which is the world bank interms of votes for NPP will vote for Bawumia or Alan regardless on who is chosen but the Northern region will massively vote against Alan if he is elected by NPP delegates. Bawumia himself has gained considerably huge following for himself based on his intellectual, religious and personal support for Akufo-Addo. Eliminating Bawumia by replacing him with Alan will be the biggest mistake NPP can ever make since it was formed, which will lead them to an irrevocable defeat in 2024 presidential elections.
