Ghana’s ‘De-facto’ Prime Minister as some people refer to him, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko and ace broadcaster Manasseh Azure Awuni have engaged in what www.Ghanaontheglobe.com have termed as ‘Social Media fight’ over the essence of the heavy military deployment for Chairperson of Electoral Commission(EC), Jean Adukwei Mensah.
Manasseh Azure Awuni has heavily criticized the heavy use of military personals as personal bodyguards for Jean Mensa, the broadcaster argued that what is the essence of the police when military is used. He is of the view that the police should be deployed to protect the EC Chair instead of the military.
Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko a member of the government is having a varied view from that of the broadcaster, Gabby is of the view that the EC Chair is currently under threat from all angle which requires those heavy military security. Manasseh once again opposed Gabby’s view on his timeline which resulted in a back and forth.
Gabby posted on his Facebook timeline, ”This woman, the returning officer for the presidential election, has had her life threatened multiple times from all manner of corners, her character insulted, her integrity denigrated and the threats to her life heightened to the highest dangerous point that any public servant should endure, and for the security services to consider it appropriate to offer her the highest form of protection they could. Her security at home, office and around her 24-7, is made up of a combination of soldiers and police. I am not sure she enjoys the security attention. But she understands she has to endure it. And, some of us have a problem with that?”
Manasseh came to reply Gabby’s post, ”She definitely needs security. But couldn’t the police do it? How about the fact that some deputy ministers have soldiers as escorts? One state agency CEO IS is protected by a soldier. The soldier is not uniformed. He introduced himself to me.”
The Facebook fight between these personalities did not seize with a reply from Gabby, ”That is your opinion. I have not referred to any deputy minister or any other appointee. I am referring to the Chairperson of the EC and the exceptional threat she has been under and what the state sees fit to keep her protected. That’s all my post is about.”
Manasseh has already given two additional replies to Gabby which is yet to be replied by Gabby. This Social Media fight between this personalities is definitely not ending anytime soon since the government is not ready to replace EC’s security with police escort.
